Named the UK’s number one ‘cultural hotspot’ in 2005, Peckham continues to draw media attention for its lively, burgeoning cultural scene. This buzz has, ominously, now migrated from arts and media sections to the property pages of the national press. Peckham’s nascent identity as London’s artistic quarter presents our community with unique opportunities. As galleries spring up and increasing numbers of artists and cultural practitioners are drawn to the area, it is important to analyse the nature of this latest transformation. The Primer Debate aims to identify among possible outcomes those that are sustainable and of greatest benefit to the community as a whole, and to develop alliances and strategies through which such outcomes may be achieved. In the view of one commentator, Peckham ‘with all its contradictions, afflictions and creative energies, may emerge as a Capital of the 21st Century’; our cultural ecology is, however, at a crucial evolutionary stage and must be nurtured with care to reach its full potential.
